There will be concurrent breakout sessions, group and individual work time, and a trip to the Northwest Museum of Arts and Culture.

This is a great professional development opportunity...lodging at the Red Lion at the Park, travel expenses and meals all provided through the grant—plus you get paid for participating.

Participation Criteria
*Teaching assignment includes U.S. History content—Grades 5-12.
*Participate in a 4 day U.S. History Workshop.
*Integrate resources and materials in the classroom.

Research and Write Your Schools USDA Wellness Policy!
REGISTRATION DEADLINE: June 2, 2006 (mail, email or fax)

This workshop will allow the participant to research various resources and use the self-assessment School Health Index to write the federally mandated USDA Wellness Plan that needs to be in place no later than the first day of the 2006-2007 school year.

15 OPI renewal units OR 1 graduate credit through Montana State University-Northern. MSU-N will charge $120.00 for this credit which is paid at the workshop.

Participants of the workshop will be eligible to apply for two mini-grants of approximately $750.00 each. Grants will be on a competitive basis. Details of the application process and criteria will be covered at the workshop.

Summer 2005

Inquiry-Based Science using NASA Materials and MediaCAST

This workshop will provide hands-on activities related to NASA produced Life Science and Biology teaching materials. A major content focus of the workshop will be an introduction to cells and Extremophiles, organisms that thrive in extreme conditions. Teachers will be provided time to develop a module that is specifically aligned to Montana Science Standards and their local district curriculum. Teachers will be introduced to MediaCAST, a digital media delivery system that will allow for the cataloging and organizing of their module. When ready to teach the module, the teacher can access the lesson and support materials through the MediaCAST System. Facilitated by staff from NASA, NRES and T.E.S.T.

Science teachers grades 5-8; High school teachers of basic biology; Science teachers who have students engaged in research projects of any science discipline are encouraged to attend.

$25 registration fee. 15 OPI renewal units OR 1 graduate credit through Montana State University-Northern. MSU-N will charge $100.00 for this credit which is paid at the workshop.

What Can the School Health Index Do For My School?

This workshop will allow the participant to look at the School Health Index as a self-assessment for their school. It will allow you to identify strengths and weaknesses in a focused manner and help you to improve your health promotion efforts in the district. Modules of the School Health Index that will receive extended discussion include physical activity, nutrition, safety, and cross-cutting of the coordinated school health program on the Classroom Performance System (CPS). Follow-up activities will include a plan of action for making your school site healthier and school year technical assistance is available to interested participants. Facilitated by Michelle Harrell.

K-12 Health Enhancement Teachers; Other district personnel with school health responsibilities will want to attend.

There is no registration fee to attend this workshop. 15 OPI renewal units OR 1 graduate credit through Montana State University-Northern. MSU-N will charge $100.00 for this credit which is paid at the workshop.

Teaching American History

Teacher Action Research

For each of three years, thirty Montana teachers of American History will have the opportunity to participate in activities and training that enhance the teaching of U.S. History in schools. A three-year grant was awarded to the Southeast Education Service Center, Price, Utah by the U.S. Department of Education.

Districts in the States of Montana and Washington are also involved in the project. Focusing on increasing teacher content knowledge of U.S. History, the project will be implemented in partnership with University History Departments from across the United States.

Featured are the most knowledgeable professors of American History in the Country. Their expertise and content presentations will come from the unifying themes and narrative of human experience from the National Council for History Education.

Methods to develop historical habits of mind will be emphasized. In addition, teachers will be able to adapt the curriculum to meet their state standards and promote student interest in American History.
